Smart Ways To Shop

You probably know about the wonderful benefits of essential oils, and how they can improve the quality of your life physically and emotionally. Also as a consumer, you want to have the highest quality of essential oils for the lowest price possible. Of course, you do not want to save money by paying less for a low quality essential oil that has little or none therapeutic values. At the same time, you should not pay a high price for an essential oil when another company offers the very same thing at a much lower price. After all, you worked hard for your money, and not necessarily a higher priced company gives you a higher quality essential oil. Probably, such a  business just makes more profit.

There are a few methods adopted by some essential oil companies that may make you spend more money, and at the same time, more difficult to shop around. Below are some of these methods :

1- The name of the essential oil

        Method# 1

Each essential oil has two names, the common English Name and the Botanical Name, which is usually in Latin, and specifies the exact plant source in different varieties from that plant. Of course, you may not have even  heard of some of the plants in their English Names either, so when you hear the name, you are not sure if it is the English Name or the Botanical Name. This method is exactly what can be used to make your shopping around more difficult.

My business cares about the environment, it went green as soon as I raised the Prices.

On most essential oil websites, you can usually see a list of the essential oils in English. Once you click on an English Name, the website takes you to another page which has the description of that particular essential oil, including its Botanical Name. However in the menu of some websites, they mix listing some essential oils with English Names and others only with their Botanical Names. When you click on an essential oil listed only with its Botanical Name to read the description, the English Name will not be mentioned.

Now, if you want to shop around for that particular essential oil, you will not be able to find it in the English listing of any other websites. Therefore, if you need this essential oil again, you have to buy it from the original company for a much higher price. Believe it or not there is a solution for this!

Solutions: First of all, some essential oil businesses are aware of this matter, and they list these types of misleading essential oils both in English and Botanical Names. Click on a Botanical Name, once you see the description page, look to see if the English Name is mentioned. If so, they did this as a service not to confuse you.
Secondly, if an essential oil name does not sound English to you, such as "Zingiber Officinale" simply type that word in a search engine as: Zingiber Officinale essential oil, and you will find a lot of the companies listing it with its English Name: Ginger!

        Method# 2

  Using a fake Botanical Name

Some dishonest businesses can make your shopping really difficult by making up a meaningless Botanical Name looking word and print it next to its English Name. For example, there are more than 7 types of Lavender essential oils, and some have its own Botanical Name.

-The Botanical Name of this oil is:

"*■§/Άζ?!"

While they all have some common therapeutic benefits, each one may also have its own specific usage as well. But you want to make sure to shop around for the exact essential oil that you have been happy with. However, the problem is every time you put the Botanical Name in the search engine either nothing comes up or only the business that you are already buying from is listed.
Well, it basically means all of the essential oils made from this particular plant in hundreds or thousands of farms all over the world are only sold through one business, and that's why their prices are so high! That doesn't sound right, does it?

Solutions: Chances are, if a business goes that far to keep their customers captive to pay ridiculously higher prices, then they also have no problem selling them the lowest quality oil there is.
Order the smallest size of that essential oil in one or more varieties from a cheaper company and compare them to the one you have. This is a very small investment. Once you find a new supplier, imagine how much money you will be saving by freeing yourself from the trap you were in before.

        Method# 3

Changing the name of the essential oil to the name of the location it was farmed

This is an interesting one. Let's explain this with a hypothetical example. Imagine a farmer in Topeka Kansas grows some English Lavender, and a distiller produces some English Lavender essential oil. Finally a retailer sells that essential oil to you with of course a small twist : Instead of calling the oil "English Lavender Essential Oil", they call it "Topeka Lavender Essential Oil", without mentioning the plant's English Name or Botanical Name on their website. Needless to say, they price the oil 3 or 4 time more than the average market value for English Lavender. Imagine, you buy this oil from them for awhile and you really like it.

- We're the only company who has
Jupiter Lavender Oil from a farm on Jupiter

However, you have a feeling they are over charging, and you want to shop around for a better price.
Searching for "Topeka Lavender Essential Oil" on internet will not help you to find this oil. At best, only the business that you have been ordering from will show up in the search engines. At this point, some people believe the oil is a unique product and the retailer is the only one on this planet they can purchase the oil from for such a high price.

Solutions: Usually, plants farmed in an area are well known locally. These types of plants normally grow better with the environmental conditions of that particular place. Call the Department of Agriculture in Topeka, as well as one or two universities around there who offer agriculture degrees. Ask a basic question, "What it the most common type of Lavender plant that is farmed in this area? (Or any other essential oil you have the same situation with).
Also, don't be surprise to receive a big speech from the retailer regarding the unique quality of their "Topeka Lavender Essential Oil", and why it is the best one in the world because of the way it was farmed or distilled. The presentation is designed to justify much higher prices for that particular oil. This kind of logic is a hard sale to some experienced essential oil users. They believe same plant that was grown conventionally on two different farms will have more or less  the same therapeutic effects. Besides, how would you know the claim behind the superb quality of their essential oil is true, because they say so?
