What is Alopecia Areata Hair Loss?

Alopecia means loss of hair from the head or from the body. Generally, patchy hair loss signifies alopecia areata. Alopecia areata typically presents with sudden hair loss causing patches to appear on the scalp or other areas of the body. Men and women can suffer from age-related hair loss or thinning, due to hormonal fluctuations. There is no cure for Alopecia Areata, but there are some treatments available to help to growth the lost hair in the effected areas.

A recently documented study judging the effectiveness of essential oils in the treatment of Alopecia areata.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of aromatherapy in the treatment of patients with alopecia areata.
DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial of 7 months' duration, with follow-up at 3 and 7 months. SETTING: Dermatology outpatient department.
PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-six patients diagnosed as having alopecia areata.
INTERVENTION: Eighty-six patients were randomized into 2 groups. The active group massaged essential oils (thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood) in a mixture of carrier oils (jojoba and grapeseed) into their scalp daily. The control group used only carrier oils for their massage, also daily.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Treatment success was evaluated on sequential photographs by 2 dermatologists (I.C.H. and A.D.O.) independently. Similarly, the degree of improvement was measured by 2 methods: a 6-point scale and computerized analysis of traced areas of alopecia.
RESULTS: Nineteen (44%) of 43 patients in the active group showed improvement compared with 6 (15%) of 41 patients in the control group (P = .008). An alopecia scale was applied by blinded observers on sequential photographs and was shown to be reproducible with good interobserver agreement (kappa = 0.84). The degree of improvement on photographic assessment was significant (P = .05). Demographic analysis showed that the 2 groups were well matched for prognostic factors.
CONCLUSIONS: The results show aromatherapy to be a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata. Treatment with these essential oils was significantly more effective than treatment with the carrier oil alone (P = .008 for the primary outcome measure). We also successfully applied an evidence-based method to an alternative therapy.

In research conducted in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland, 43 alopecia patients received daily 2-minute scalp massages with essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender, cedarwood, mixed with jojoba and grapeseed oils. Another 43 received scalp massages using just jojoba and grapeseed oils. After seven months, 19 people in the essential-oil group grew hair, compared to 6 people in the control group. The results included one man who regrew a full head of hair from an almost completely bald scalp, says Isabelle C. Hay, MRCP, the medical doctor and specialist in dermatology who spearheaded the study. The above comments were excerpted from Prevention Magazine.

Using Directions:

Massage Oil:

Make sure the affected areas are clean oil, hair spray, or any other elements. if not, use some skin cleaner on a piece of cotton and gently clean the area.
Apply a few drops to the area, enough to cover it but not too much.
Massage until it is observed by the skin.
Continue to use it for one to two months

Important Notes:

This blend can be work directly on the skin, However, if you experience any skin sensitivity, then add 15 to 20 drops of the blend to 1/2 oz of Grape Seed carrier oil. In that case, try to use the blend twice a day
If you receive steroid shots to the affected area by a medical doctor, do not use the blend for 24 hours after receiving the shots.

The study does not indicate the proportions of the blend. Here, at Silky Scents, we have put together a very strong synergy of the named oils, plus 2 more well known essential oils of Sandalwood and Chamomile. This blend was successfully tested on person with Alopecia condition, but we make NO claims as to whether this synergistic blend will give you the results found in the study, however we welcome replies from anyone who tries it.

Using Directions:

Using Directions:

How to make a spray : Fill the Free included Spray Bottle with 1 ounce water and add 12 to 16 drops of the blend to it, close the spray and shake it well and spray it over your exposed skin.
