Reed Diffusers are
becoming very popular in the field of aromatherapy, while
they also provides a pleasant and refreshing home scent. The reed
diffuser is smoke, wax, mess, and flame free. The simple
elegance of the reed diffuser design enhances the
aesthetics of any room environment. |
|
The reed diffuser releases a
refreshing fragrance for months at a time and a reed
diffuser can be placed almost anywhere, even the office.
With the right materials and very easy preparation, you
can use essential oils for aromatherapy scenting in a
reed diffuser. |

|
To prepare a reed diffuser to
work properly with your essential oils, you need the
following : |

|
The "reed" in a reed diffuser delivers the essential oil with
a distinct yet simple wicking system of reeds. The oil seeps
up through the reeds of the reed diffuser allowing the scent to
fill the room.
For optimal diffusion you really
need to be using reeds made of Rattan (A climbing palm).
The bamboo diffusers are not able
to diffuse nearly as effective as rattan reeds, especially for
essential oils.

 Each rattan reed contains about 20 "channels" that run the
entire length of the reed. Much like "mini-straws", these
channels "suck" the oil to the top of the reeds. The scent is
then naturally dispersed into the air through evaporation and
leaving your home smelling wonderful!
However, bamboo reeds or chutes would not work as they do not
contain the channels for the oils to wick (travel) up. Bamboo
contains "nodes" which block liquid from wicking (traveling)
up and scenting the air.
The more
reed sticks used, the more aroma will be diffused. The number of reeds depends
on the strength of the oil, the size of the room, and your desire for the scent.
The average is 10 to 12 reeds per diffuser. Start with less reeds and you can
always add more later. Remember, never try to wash a used reed and use it for a
different oil.
To make sure the reeds
continue to diffuse:
*
Once a week, flip the reed sticks so that the “dry” side of the sticks is in the
bottle and the saturated end is in the air (Best to do this in your kitchen
sink).
* Once every 2 to 3 months change the reeds with
new and fresh ones.
Because the
sticks will be totally saturated, and the cells in the reeds get somewhat
clogged losing their ability to pull the scent up into the reeds and diffuse the
oil into the room.

Once every few months, check the oil level and
add more oil mixed with "Reed Base" if necessary. |

You can either use essential oils for therapeutic effects or just Perfume
oils for scenting a room. Although, rattan reeds are the best for
wicking up the oil, you still need to mix your oil with the "Reed Diffuser
Base". The reed diffuser base is specially formulated to aide your oil in
wicking up the reeds. The "Reed Diffuser Reed" does not have any alcohol.
To prepare your oil for the reed diffuser, typical
formulations is :
* Essential Oils :
Mix about 80% Reed Diffuser Base, with about 20% Essential Oil.
* Perfume Oils : Mix about
2.5 oz Reed Diffuser Base, with about 1.5 oz Perfume Oil.

The more reed diffuser base you add the more mellow the scent of the
essential oil becomes to the point that it serves it's therapeutic effect
without creating a headache. You can start this experiment with mixing up small
amounts of the essential oil with the reed diffuser base, and each time write
down the percentage mixed until you reach the desired mixture to make a larger
amount. Remember, every time you change the essential oil, you have to search
for a new mixing formula, which means you would need a different percentage of
the new essential oil and the diffuser base mixture.
The base mixes well with
fragrance oils and enhances the capillary action, encouraging the diffuser oil
to travel up the reed diffuser sticks where the scent can be effectively
dispersed into the environment. A formulation with too much Essential or Perfume
oil will not effectively migrate up the reeds, and will hinder effective scent
dispersion.

Why Not Alcohol? |
|
Alcohol is less dense and evaporates quickly at a much lower temperature than
water. When you mix alcohol with your oil, it evaporates at the room temperature,
and with it, your oil evaporates at a quick and undesirable rate from the oil
surface before even going through the reeds. That's why a cologne's scent does
not last on the body too long, because the alcohol in the cologne evaporates
with the body temperature which causes the scented oil in the cologne to
dissipate. But perfume oils do not have alcohol so they last all day on
the body. |

You Can choose either Essential Oils or Perfume Oils in your Reed Diffuser. |
|
|
|
* Essential Oils : Use
Essential Oils to benefit from the therapeutic effects, as well as scenting your
room. Essential Oils must be pure before mixing with the Reed Diffuser Base. Do
not add carrier oils (Such as Sweet Almond), DPG (Dipropylene glycol), water, or
alcohol. Do not use 10% essential oils, the oil must be pure. Also, make
sure to choose an essential oil that is safe for diffusing. Some essential oils,
such as Birch, are not recommended for diffusing. |

* Perfume Oils : Perfume oils
are synthetic with no therapeutic benefits, but they sure smell wonderful and
can do a great job scenting your room. Make sure you use perfume oils not
colognes, because perfume oils do not contain alcohol. Do not mix your perfume
oil with alcohol, water, carrier oils (Such as Sweet Almond), or DPG (Dipropylene
