Aromatherapy Properties: (Uses) This Oil is the most popular type of lavender essential oils. This is Lavender 40/42, and is the standardized essential oil for lavender. The “40/42%” refers to the content of linalool and linalyl acetate, which are two aromatic components responsible for conferring scent we most closely associate with Lavender. Lavender 40/42% is always carefully developed so the linalool and linalyl acetate levels are in the 40/42% range resulting in a final product that always smells more or less the same. This consistency maintains the scent to be the same from batch to batch. The numbers in Lavender 40/42 indicate the linalyl acetate content; in this case, they indicate the product contains 40-42% of linalyl acetate. Lavender 40/42 is generally a blend of various lavenders in order to get a consistent scent from batch to batch, with processors adding linalyl acetate to cover the smell of camphor or borneol components of a given lavender. Since pure essential oils (not diluted, adulterated or tampered with to make them smell better) are ""from the plant"" each lot may vary slightly (sometimes noticeably) due to the climate conditions that year, altitude of the region they're grown in, time of day harvested, etc. Most soapers seem to prefer the Lavender 40/42 because it smells the way they believe lavender should smell and it's fairly inexpensive......about half the price of other, more expensive lavenders.
History: Lavender is adapted to living in a dry climate and is native to the western half of the Mediterranean, reaching altitudes of up to 1800 meters. It is believed that the Romans and the Benedictine monks subsequently introduced it to rest of Europe.
